This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
